Object Of My Affection, The B+ George Hanson (Paul Rudd), an elementary school teacher who loves his job, loves children and loves his boyfriend, Dr. Rob (Tim Daley). Unfortunately, Dr. Rob wants to fool around, only instead of telling George outright, he goes about trying to find another apartment for him to move to. Enter Nina Borowski (Jennifer Aniston), a social worker who meets Dr. Rob at a party and then approaches George to let him know that she has an extra room available if he wants to stay with her until he finds a place of his own. George is quite naturally embarrassed and angry at the same time, but moves in with her anyway. This seems to complicate matters for Nina's boyfriend Vince (John Pankow) who wants to be the one to move in and immediately questions the relationship between the roommates. Truth be told, Nina does start to fall for George and George starts getting comfortable in a place where no gay man is supposed to be. Taking an already uncomfortable situation and turning it up a few notches, Nina discovers she is pregnant, only she doesn't feel that Vince is someone she wants to spend the rest of her life with. George, however, would make the perfect father and perfect husband, so what's a little thing like homosexuality to get in the way? Unfortunately, quite a bit. George starts to fall in love with Paul (Amo Gulinello), the object of Rodney Fraser's (Nigel Hawthorne) affection. Needless to say, Nina is jealous of George's relationship because she wants him for herself and Rodney is forced to come to terms with what Paul wants versus his own desire. This all sounds heavy handed, yet "The Object of My Affection" is a comedy and a very funny one at that. The ending is a happy one, but one that will also have you wondering what might have happened if things had played out differently. |
