The Deep End - C+ Margaret (Tilda Swinton) has a few problems; her husband is stationed on an aircraft carrier and cannot be reached, her father-in-law has a tricky heart, her daughter needs rides to ballet, her youngest son to baseball and, oh yes, her oldest son, Beau (Jonathan Tucker), may have killed a nightclub owner. How does she discover this? When she stumbles upon the body the morning after having heard noises outside and witnessing her son running back into the house. Does Margaret call the Police? No. Does she ask Beau to explain what happened? No, but that's because she has to get rid of the body first and that's exactly what she does. Margaret takes the body out on the lake and dumps it off in the shallow water near a local road. It's only after she returns that she discovers the deceased man's car parked in front of their house, which prompts a return trip out on the lake to find the car keys. Mothers apparently do these kinds of things all the time. Just when she's just about ready to make the coffee and forget all this strange business, Alek Spera (Goran Visnjic) makes his entrance with a videotape showing her son engaging in a little anal action with the deceased. Spera knows the club owner was there the previous evening and informs Margaret of his intention to turn the tape over to the Police unless she gives him $50,000 in the next 24 hours. There's really no point in relating how the film ends because it's likely to turn future viewers off with its ridiculousness and the only saving grace in this muddled mess is the acting. When all is said and done, I'd recommend "The Deep End", but only on the strength of the cast. If you're looking for a plausible story, you'd have more luck with "Tomb Raider" and that's not saying much. |
